Applied Research assistant working with industry on innovative emissions control system

(L-R) Qwyntyn Scurr, Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵResearch Assistant; Scott Bell, Co-founder Inversion Point Technologies; Etienne Malherbe, Cleantech Coop Student.

Applied Research Assistant Qwyntyn Scurr is working with industry partners to develop a cutting-edge system to mitigate methane emissions. A graduate of the Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵElectronics Engineering Technology program, Qwyntyn is working on a control system that will safely disperse low concentration hydrogen peroxide solution high in the air to neutralize methane in the atmosphere, supplementing natural processes that keep our air clean. By supporting safe and efficient tests with their control system, Qwyntyn is supporting research into a practical solution that can be implemented in various environments. Once complete, the system will be field-tested at the Wind Energy Institute of Canada in Tignish. This will provide valuable data to ensure its effectiveness and reliability before wider deployment.

Scott Bell, founder of Inversion Point Technologies spoke highly of Qwyntyn’s work and about his company’s collaboration with Holland College.

"Qwyntyn exemplifies the hands on-learning and can-do attitude we've come to expect from Holland College. He has been instrumental in guiding and executing on the design for Inversion Point's atmospheric methane removal prototype, including an electrical control panel, industrial PLC, safety critical closed loop controls and integration with remote wireless, cellular, and IOT sensors and communications. Qwyntyn and Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵgraduates are clearly being equipped with the skills and attitudes to succeed and build technology for the modern world. With increasing effects from climate change, all of our collective skills, creativity, and efforts will be needed to improve efficiency, electrify what we can, and offset remaining emissions. We look forward to continued collaborations in the future,” he said.

Qwyntyn’s project represents Holland College’s commitment to hands-on learning, industry collaboration, technological innovation and environmental leadership. This project was made possible with financial support from the Government of PEI's Climate Challenge Fund and from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
