Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵhas announced that it will add 12 seats to its Carpentry program this coming September.
»¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵ’s population growth, due to immigration, has led to record low apartment vacancy levels across the province. This, coupled with skilled labour shortages, and expanded investments in housing incentives for developers, has created a significant increase in demand in the number of workers required in the construction sector.
“The impetus to increase seats in our Carpentry program is a direct response to calls from industry and government to look at ways of attracting more skilled workers to our construction sector,” said Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵPresident, Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald. “Our Carpentry program has historically had strong enrolment numbers so we feel confident that these additional seats can be filled.”
The Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵCarpentry program is a hands-on, one-year certificate program delivered on the Summerside Waterfront Campus. Students learn about blueprints, building layout, framing, roof, wall, and floor systems, interior and exterior finishes and more. This past year, students used what they learned to build two, two-bedroom units that will be used to support Islanders on the social housing registry.
