The Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵFoundation has established the R. Wayne MacLeod Entrance Bursary for Construction Technology and Management. The bursary was established in memory of R. Wayne MacLeod, a well-known leader in »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵ’s construction industry, who passed away in October 2021.
MacLeod grew up in Pictou, Nova Scotia and moved to »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵ after graduating from Pictou Academy. He completed his carpentry training at the Provincial Vocational Institute during the evenings while working at Schurman Construction during the day. He loved building things, and he used this lifelong love and his knowledge and experience to make his mark in the local construction industry.
His entrepreneurial endeavors began in 1975 when he started his own company, MacLeod Construction, and then he branched out, becoming a partner in C.R.M. Ready Mix. He served as an industry representative on the Provincial Apprenticeship Advisory Board in the 1980s and was known for always sharing his knowledge and time to mentor others.
His wife of 54 years, Doris, said it is the family’s hope that recipients of the bursary in his memory will also look for opportunities to mentor and assist others the way he did.
“Wayne’s mentoring extended beyond his professional life to his children and grandchildren as well,” said Doris, noting that they spent many hours hammering and sawing under his instruction in the family garage. “Given how important it was to Wayne to pass along knowledge to others, we felt that supporting the education of future students would be a fitting way to honour his memory. I think he would be really pleased.”
“We are so grateful to the MacLeod family for this wonderful investment in our students,” said Jo-Ann Campbell-Boutilier, Executive Director of the Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵFoundation. “For many students, the financial assistance they receive is what’s needed to make their educational dreams a reality. For others, it’s the motivational boost they need, knowing that others believe in their potential.”
The R. Wayne MacLeod Entrance Bursary for Construction Technology and Management is open to full-time students entering the Construction Technology and Management program who demonstrate financial need. A bursary valued at approximately $1,100 will be given annually starting in 2022. Incoming students can apply for the inaugural bursary at hollandcollege.com under Awards and Scholarships. The application deadline for 2022 is September 1.
