Well-known historian and scholar David Weale will offer a short course on spirituality at Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵover the winter months. The non-credit course, entitled Soul Moments: spiritual experiences of everyday life, will be offered on Thursday nights from January 17 to March 6.
According to Dr. Weale, the course explores spiritual experiences that occur in the everyday lives of all people.
"These experiences have nothing to do with particular religious traditions or beliefs, but everything to do with being human," he explained. Weale maintains that these commonplace experiences, which he calls "thin moments," are those that "temporarily deliver us outside the confines of egoism," and put us in touch with something infinitely greater than ourselves.
Topics to be discussed include the spirituality of landscape, of music, of hobbies, of sports, of friendship and sexuality, of dreams, of ritual, and of aging.
Weale taught the history of Christianity at the University of »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵ for more than twenty years, and recently authored a popular book entitled Chasing the Shore; little stories of spirit and landscape.
