Job seekers using creative approach


Participants of an Island work experience and career search program are thinking outside the box when it comes to finding employment.

Participants of SandWave, a Virtual Business Practice Firm, have the opportunity to work in a variety of areas including marketing and sales, office administration, graphics, accounting, communications, purchasing/inventory and human resources. Upon completion of the program, individuals are equipped with tools and skills which will assist them in making the transition to the labour market.

“The Practice Firm is a realistic business model that allows individuals to further develop existing skills and gain new capabilities,” states Mike Gillis, Employer Counsellor. “These people are ready to work!”

Eager to display their skills and talents, participants are inviting employers to a series of business mixers planned for the month of February. These mixers will take place on site at the Sandwave office at the Royalty Centre, 40 Enman Crescent.

“By attending, employers, entrepreneurs, managers and human resources personnel will have direct access to a pool of qualified candidates,” said Millie MacKenzie, Program Manager. “This approach can save the employer the time and cost of advertising for potential employees.”

Employers can also benefit from the year-round, job matching service provided free-of-charge. Employers have the opportunity to contact Sandwave with an outline of the skills set required for a potential employee. Participants? resumes are reviewed and qualified individuals are referred to the employer.

Funding for this project is provided by the Canada/»¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵ Labour Market Development Agreement (LMDA), co-managed by the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development and the provincial Department of Development and Technology. Holland »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵsupports and administrates the program. The University of »¢Ñ¨ÊÓƵ also provides support to the program.
